All the Details “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” John 14:1 Andrea stewed over a mounting pile of pressures. Just-bought groceries for tomorrow’s dinner guest sprawled across every bit of counter space. Buried under them was a Sunday school lesson to be prepared. A week’s worth of laundry spilled out of the laundry room into the kitchen, and an upsetting letter from a faraway friend in need lay teetering on the edge of the sink. In the midst of this turmoil, Steven’s Sunday school teacher called. “We’ll be leaving for the carnival about noon. If Stephen didn’t bring home his permission slip, just write the usual information on a slip of paper and send it along with him. Andrea heard the doorbell ring, followed by an awful commotion. Rushing to the living room, she found two little girls waving pink slips of paper at her crying son. “What’s the matter?” she asked as she gently put her arms around him. “I can’t go!” he wailed. “I don’t have one of those pink papers!” “Oh, yes, you do. Only yours happens to be white,” she said as she dried his tears, stuffed the paper in his pocket, and sent him out the door. Back in the kitchen Andrea wondered, Hasn’t he been my child long enough to know I’d have a solution? Suddenly a tiny smile crept across her face as she surveyed the chaos around her- and she could almost hear her Heavenly Father say, “Haven’t you been My child long enough to know that I have it taken care of?” Trust God where you cannot trace him. Do not try to penetrate the cloud he brings over you; rather look to the bow that is on it. The mystery is God’s; the promise is yours. The question for today is I hope with God’s Help to improve in? Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Jesus spoke these words just before he was taken up to heaven. Some call this “The Great Commission” When Jesus spoke these words they were meant for all who believed and would believe. Does this mean we are all to become preachers? Well in a way, Yes! In the sense that we need to be a shining light for those who live in darkness. We do not became this by being silent. And we do not have to stand on a pulpit to be heard. We simply need to share our testimonies with people or as some call it our “life song.” What is our life song? It is our story, our testimony of how Jesus came into our lives and changed us, healed us from the sickness of sin and made us blameless. I believe God puts people into our lives that may have gone through or going through the same kind of things we went through before and after we come to know him. Sometimes we get caught up in quoting scripture and forget that all we really need to do is share what He has done for us, and what He has done for them. We forget to let the gift He left for us “The Holy Spirit” do our talking for us. We forget about “The Power” that is ours to show. More than anything we forget what Jesus asked us to do for him. Let your light shine unto the world, do not be ashamed, Be a bold witness to the power, the hope, and the love, that God showed when He have his Son to die on the cross in our place for our sins. Amen, mel Learn more about our ministry at www.myjesusnexus.com
Peace at Last "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not Let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27 With a throbbing headache, Diane prepared breakfast for her children and made a mental note of all the people she needed to contact. Her aunt in the nursing home. Her single neighbor down the street. But she just didn't have the time! Diane thought of a friend who had just lost her mother. A simple card could say so much. Her thoughts were interrupted by the telephone. Her prayer partner told her that a man in their church had just suffered a heart attack. So many needs, and so little time! "If only I had time to take care of all these things, lord," she whispered. In a few minutes, the kids were gone, and silence filled the house. Finally, she could rest. She turned on the television, then it dawned on her that this would be the perfect time to address a few cards and make some calls. After a few minutes of prayer, Diane wrote out notes and dropped them in the mail on her way to visit her aunt. Then she returned home and had the entire afternoon to clean house and prepare dinner. After dinner there was enough left over to take a plateful of food to a lonely nieghbor. When she got home, Diane thought she had never felt better. God had given her the time she needed to take care of all the things that had weighed so heavily on her heart. And giving, she had received far more than she ever expected. God takes life's pieces and gives us unbroken peace. The question for the day is "If I had an extra hour each day this week, I would ? Taken out of the book of "Quiet Moments with God for Women."
Realistic Expectations The Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed. Psalms 103:13-14 “ Watch out! Can’t you be more careful?” It seemed lately like Jackie had been saying those words far too often to her six-year-old, Katie. This time her daughter’s love of ketchup had resulted in a large tomato stain on a brand-new tablecloth. It had been a long day already, and Jackies temper flared as the angry words tumbled out, she saw Katie’s quivering lip and tear slip out of the corner of her eye. Jackie felt terrible. Sure, the bottle had fallen over, but her daughter had not intentionally made a mountain of ketchup on the table. It was an accident. Jackie had responded inappropiately and barked an angry response without thinking. She stopped wiping the stain and reached across the table to give her child a hug. And then she looked her straight in the eye and said, “ I’m sorry I yelled at you. Will you forgive Mommy?” Later, while finishing the dishes, that Katie was only six years old. She often expected her to behave as if she were nine or ten. Thankfully, God isn’t like that. He remembers how He made us. And in his compassion, He never expects more from us than He knows we can do or be. Have a heart that never hardens, a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts. Let’s Try It Again! A heart at peace gives life to th body. Proverbs 14:30 Misty held her big brother’s hand in a vise-like grip. Her eyes widened as she took in the incredible scene playing out before her. There, atop the best sledding hill in all of Connecticut, her eighty-year-old grandmother was preparing for the ride of her life. Poised on the toboggan, she sat as royalty, her long fur coat wrapped around her legs and her fur cap pinned perfectly into place. A small push on the snow with her elegant gloved hand...and she was off. Halfway down the hill, the toboggan toppled to the side, and Misty watched in horror as her grandmother did an amazing acrobatic move through the snow, tumbling three times before sliding to halt midway. Running full tilt to the rescue, Misty arrived breathless before a disheveled lump of fur. Rosy cheeks appeared beneath a fur cap that was relocated to cover one ear. Snow was encrusted in the hair surrounding her face, and her bright, mischievous eyes met misty’s fearful gaze. With the confident laugh of one who loves God and knows of His care, Grandmother grabbed hold of misty’s hand and said, “Again! Let’s try it again!” If you ask, God will give you the confidence to step into life’s adventures, knowing that His hand will always be there to catch you. Confidence in the natural world is self-reliance, in the spiritual world it is God- reliance. The question for today is “It would take a big dose of courage for me to try? Teenage Trauma Charm can be deceptive and beauty Doesn’t last, but a woman who fears And reverences God shall be greatly praised. Proverbs 31:30 “But, Mom, all the girls are wearing black lipstick!” her teenage daughter cried. “I don’t care if they’re wearing blue lipstick,” Carol screamed. “You are not going out of this house dressed like a witch!” Rachel stomped her foot and flounced out of the kitchen, and Carol winced as she heard her daughter slam the bedroom door. First it was miniskirts and a pierced nose, and now this. Remember when you wore miniskirts and white go-go boots? The still, small voice of God remind her. Remember pale pink lipstick and bare midriffs? Yes, Lord, she argued inside, but You don’t approve of her rebellion, do you? God seemed to answer, I loved you even when you were yet in sin. Carol did love her daughter, despite Rachel’s outrageous behavior... and she had done some stupid things when she was a teenager. “Rachel,” she said, tapping at the door. “Can we talk?” “Go away!” her daughter sobbed. “Please?” Gently, Carol opened the door and sat down on the bed beside her daughter. “I love you, you know. That’s why care so much.” Rachel rolled away from her mother and said, “All you care about is what your friends will say!” “Right now, all I care about is what you have to say. Talk to me. Every teenager is unique and special, yet every teenager needs the same things: love, discipline, and understanding. Start a dialogue with your teenager today. The first duty of love is to listen The question for today is: A topic that my teenager is interested in is? Taken out of the book of: “Quiet Moments with God for Women.”
Volcano Stew Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: REJOICE! Phillippians 4:4 Candy was running late getting home from work again. She finally stumbled into the house muttering apologies and grabbed the pot of leftover stew from the refrigerator. Slamming it on the stove, she flipped on the burner and rushed to change into some comfortable clothes while hollering, “ Someone please set the table!” A few minutes later when she rushed to back into the kitchen, her nose sensed disaster. The Stove! The pot of stew she had placed on the burner was bubbling imitation of Mount Vesuvius. Tall columns of tomato-red sauce sputtered into the air above the pot. Pieces of vegetables spewed over its sides. Candy shrieked, and her family hurried into the kitchen. The pot was boiling so furiously that it was impossible to turn the burner off without being spattered by the tomato-sauce columns. The foaming vegetables were spilling over so quickly that no one could grab the pot’s handles without getting burned. But someone had to try. Amid exclamations of “ouch!” “Hey, that’s hot!” and “Yeow!” hands reached from all directions and eased the pot from its heat source. Quickly Candy switched the burner off and surveyed the kitchen. Stew had splattered everywhere, and everyone’s hands were covered with the sticky red goo. Her oldest child broke the silence. With a glint in her eye, she licked the stew from her hands and said, “ Good dinner, Mom.” The laughter that accompanied the cleanup that night echoed with the Bible’s admonition to always rejoice. A good laugh is sunshine in a house. The question for the day is: “ I could save time if I slowed down enough to?” Taken out of the book of: “Quiet Moments with God for Women.”
Do You Hunger? Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will filled (Matthew 5:6) A few weeks back, our church began to have it’s weekly Wednesday night dinner, after which we have a bible lesson by the pastor. The place was packed and everyone was having a great time eating what are wonderful meals and getting a chance to fellowship in an informal setting. Then It came time for the lesson and all but what was maybe 10 people were left. Those that left hungered to food but not the word. The way Christians act sometimes is as if too much is excepted from their time. I think if Jesus took the time to come to us and die for our sins, so that we might be saved and never perish, it is the least we can do by giving of our time to learn more of this wonderful love He has for us! You see when we give to God, be it out time, money, our ourselves, God will give some much more to us. God has a plan and purpose for your life. How can you learn what it is if you turn your back to him? God wants to fill your life with love peace and joy. How will you receive it if you ignore him? God wants to bless you. How can he if your eyes are closed to his word? We need to be hungry people! Hungry for the Lord! After all God has done for us, can’t you do this for him? Go to Church, spend time is His Word, Go to Bible Studies, and Pray! Do these things and Hunger, so that He can fill you! I will finish this message with quotes from an article entitled “H Blessed Are Those Who Hunger” in the September 2007 issue of Christianity Today. If this verse is to you one of the most blessed statements of the whole of scripture, you can be quite certain you are a Christian; if it is not, then you had better examine the foundations again. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount It is the desire for God which is the most fundamental appetite of all, and it is an appetite we can never eliminate. We may seek to disown it, but it will not go away. If we deny that it is there, we shall in fact only divert it to some other object or range of objects. And that will mean that we invest some creature or creatures with the full burden of our need for God, a burden which no creature can carry. Simon Tugwell, The Beatitudes This Beatitude prompts a look at our hearts desire. What hungers and desires operate within us? Which of them commands our utmost loyalty? John W. Miller, The Christian Way It is not the one who has attained righteousness but the one who hungers for it whom the Beatitudes assert God blesses. Bonnie B. Thurston, Religious Vows, the Sermon on the Mount, and Christian Living Thus, because it is commonly thought that the rich are made wealthy through their own greed, Jesus says in effect: “No, it is just the opposite. For it is righteousness that produces true wealth. Thus, so long as you act righteously, you do not fear poverty or tremble at hunger. Rather, those who extort are those who lose all, while one who is in love with righteousness possesses all other goods in safety.” Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew Biblical righteousness is more than a private and personal affair; it includes social righteousness as well.... Thus Christians are committed to hunger for righteousness in the whole human community as something pleasing to a righteous God. John R. Stott, The Message of the Sermon on the Mount The Hunger for righteousness is the one appetite that Christ blesses-not to covet possessions or achievement or recognition, but to live, through every action and perception, the Kingdom of God. Jim Forest, The Ladder of the Beatitudes One might eat and eat of the superficial, cotton-candy righteousness vended by the professional religious hucksters and never have his hunger assuaged. Or he might drink and drink of their holy water and never have his thirst quenched. But the Kingdom righteousness is meat indeed and drink indeed-rich nourishing, satisfying. Clarence Jordan, Sermon on the Mount Free meal is often just to good to pass up! I mean it coast nothing, you just have to decide to receive it! Even then you still want to know what it is your having. It’s the same with salvation. God sent His Son to pay the price for us, by giving his life for ours on the cross, all we have to do is decide to receive him as Lord of our lives! Why don’t you want to know all you can about the one who did this for you? For us! Do You Hunger Now? In Jesus Name, Amen! mel
Penny bear They will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age. 1 Timothy 6:19 In the 1950s, a honey distributor packaged its honey in a glass bottle shaped like a baby bear. Grandma used this brand of honey in her cooking, and she quickly used up the contents. The bottle was too pretty to throw away, so she put the bottle to use as a penny jar. Her grandchildren loved to count the pennies in grandma’s “penny bear.”They’d pour the penny bear’s contents onto the kitchen table and make neat stacks of pennies. Then they’d write the date and the total amount of pennies on a small slip of paper and tuck it into the penny bear’s lid. Whenever the penny bear was full, Grandma took it to the bank and put the pennies into a savings account. The empty penny bear reappeared on the kitchen counter with a clean slip of paper in its lid. When Grandma’s oldest granddaughter began preparation for college, she noticed a piece of paper sticking out of the top of the empty penny bear. She picked up the bottle and discovered that the paper was a check for the total cost of her books for her first semester at college. Because of Grandma’s penny-saving habits, there was enough money in the penny bear account to but her college textbooks for that first semester and for several more years. Now whenever her granddaughter finds a penny on the ground, she thanks God for Grandma’s faithful stewardship. Whoever is capable of giving is rich. The question for the day is “ How could I save so as to have to share with others? Taken out of the book of “Quiet Moments with God for Women
