Please understand that silence is exceptance. ~ Carrie ~ IMI -------------- Forwarded Message: -------------- From: "Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation" To: "CAREBEAR5000@ATT.NET" Subject: Urgent Congressional Alert from the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 15:30:21 +0000 Congressional Alert from the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation April 12, 2007 From Mary Beliveau, Legislative Director (beliveau@paprolife.org) Pennsylvanians Need to Thank Senator Bob Casey for Critical Vote In Spite of Heavy Pressure, Casey Stood Firm and Voted Against Using Tax Dollars for Research That Involves the Killing of Human Embryos Please send to any appropriate lists. Despite heavy pressure from Democratic leaders and the biotech industry, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey stood firm for life by voting against S. 5, a bill that mandates the use of taxpayer dollars for research that requires the killing of human embryos. While the bill ultimately passed by a vote of 63-34, the vote was just shy of the two-thirds majority needed to override a Presidential veto. Meanwhile, the Senate passed an alternative bill, S. 30, that funds stem cell research that does not involve harming or destroying living human embryos. Senator Casey voted in favor of that bill, which was approved by a 70-28 vote. It is unclear if House Democratic leaders will allow the House to vote on S. 30. Pennsylvanians need to flood Senator Bob Casey's offices with phone calls thanking him for his vote against S. 5 and for standing up for life at this difficult time in the history of our nation. Prior to the vote, Casey stated: "I remain opposed to federal funding of research that involves the destruction of living embryos. That is why I cannot support S. 5." PA's Senator Arlen Specter was a sponsor of S. 5 and voted for it. Let him know that you are displeased with his vote for S. 5 and that you don't want your tax dollars used for research that requires the destruction of living human embryos. ACTION: Activate your telephone alert lists. Let your Senators know how you feel about using taxpayer dollars for research that involves the destruction of living human embryos. 1) Call Senator Bob Casey: Washington Office - Toll-free 1-866-802-2833 Harrisburg Office - Toll-free 1-866-461-9159 Message: "I want to thank Senator Casey for his vote against S. 5 and for taking a stand for LIFE." 2) Call Senator Arlen Specter: Washington Office: 202-224-4254 Message: "I am NOT pleased about Senator Specter's vote for S. 5. I don't want my tax money used for research that requires the killing of human embryos." Background: The House passed its version of the legislation (H.R 3) in January by a vote of 253-174, 32 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed for an override of the president's veto. President Bush has said he will veto the bill. Following the veto, the Senate is expected to vote on whether to override the veto, and a very close vote is expected. This is why so much pressure is being put on PA's Senator Bob Casey. However, Senator Casey did state prior to this vote that he would vote not to override the President's veto. His vote could be the vote that prevents the Senate from overriding the President's veto. If less than two-thirds of the Senators who are present vote to override, the bill will be dead. If two-thirds of the Senators present vote to override, the House then will vote on whether to override. It is expected that the House will not override the veto. The Democratic leadership along with other pro-embryonic stem cell research forces continues to push for taxpayer dollars to be used for research that involves the destruction of living human embryos when NO human disease or condition has been treated with embryonic stem cell research. It is unfortunate that people with disabilities and their families are led to believe that embryonic stem cell research is their only hope when in fact the real advances have been made with adult stem cell research that has already successfully treated or cured more that 72 diseases and conditions, including "miracle cures" of those who were previously paralyzed. See ethical stem cell advances at www.stemcellreaserach.org/facts/acs-ref.pdf. IN THIS ISSUE: Call Senator Casey's Office and Thank Him for Voting Against Taxpayer Funding of Unethical Embryonic Stem Cell Research! 4800 Jonestown Rd., Suite 102; Harrisburg, PA; 17109| www.paprolife.org | Copyright © 2007 Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation
