Penny bear

They will lay up treasure for themselves
as a firm foundation for the coming age.
1 Timothy 6:19

In the 1950s, a honey distributor packaged its honey in a glass bottle shaped like a baby bear. Grandma used this brand of honey in her cooking, and she quickly used up the contents. The bottle was too pretty to throw away, so she put the bottle to use as a penny jar.

Her grandchildren loved to count the pennies in grandma’s “penny bear.”They’d pour the penny bear’s contents onto the kitchen table and make neat stacks of pennies. Then they’d write the date and the total amount of pennies on a small slip of paper and tuck it into the penny bear’s lid. Whenever the penny bear was full, Grandma took it to the bank and put the pennies into a savings account. The empty penny bear reappeared on the kitchen counter with a clean slip of paper in its lid.

When Grandma’s oldest granddaughter began preparation for college, she noticed a piece of paper sticking out of the top of the empty penny bear. She picked up the bottle and discovered that the paper was a check for the total cost of her books for her first semester at college. Because of Grandma’s penny-saving habits, there was enough money in the penny bear account to but her college textbooks for that first semester and for several more years.

Now whenever her granddaughter finds a penny on the ground, she thanks God for Grandma’s faithful stewardship.

Whoever is capable of giving is rich.

The question for the day is “ How could I save so as to have to share with others?
